Fayette Junction Sketch-up Model

Written by Kristina Jones

The City of Fayetteville Long Range Planning Division generated the Fayette Junction Master Plan through a charrette process September 13-18, 2008 with the participation of over 100 stakeholders. One of the main goals of this process was to enable stakeholders to visualize change over time. A SketchUp model of Fayette Junction, a historic railroad lumber stop that generated the initial wave of development in the neighborhood, enabled stakeholders to see how this rail hub could again become central to the neighborhood when envisioned as a mass transit rail stop. The model also demonstrates how underutilized land can transform with infill that adheres to an urban form, providing a sense of place and possibility.

Existing Conditions

Kristina Jones, Strategic Planning and Internal Consulting Technician, created a model of the hub as visualized by stakeholders, by bringing together a variety existing and proposed elements. It contains natural and geographic features such as topography, existing trees, and an existing stream. It also features a comprehensive townscape, including sidewalks with street trees, pedestrians, automobiles, the city’s planned trail system, water features, plazas and parks. The model depicts green-roofs and a parking garage adjacent to the transit stop and plaza.

Proposed Model

The model received the 2009 Arkansas chapter American Planning Association award for Achievement in Technology. Kristina first gained experience with SketchUp at the New Design Center through an 8 hour intro to SketchUp class. She combined the skills gained in this class with her knowledge of AutoCad and ArcMap to create the final model which can be seen at:
